ETFC Statement on Black LIves Matter
ETFC is very saddened about the death of George Floyd, in addition to all those who came before him. It is terrible to think that this level of racism still exists in our community and country. It is horrifying to think it’s actually condoned and encouraged in some quarters. However, racism does exist and its roots are deeply embedded. The global outcry over this tragedy has become a watershed moment, a catalyst for greater empathy, understanding, and, hopefully, a sustained movement toward eradicating oppression in its many insidious forms.
Since 1901, The East Toledo Family Center (ETFC) has been helping families from all walks of life. Our mission statement is “strengthening and serving our community one life at a time”. Each and every day our staff and volunteers work hard to help all families be successful. We stand with our minority families and every family we serve through our programs and services. We condemn racism; and we know that we must work harder to make changes that address the injustices that exist, especially with the minority families that we serve.
We will continue to do that in collaboration with our program partners, staff, and board members to be an advocate of real change for the families affected by racism. We also will move to strengthen and foster more partnerships with organizations who advocate for people of color. We will educate, empower, and engage all to be sure that there is significant change to how minorities are treated. That change starts with you. We are listening.
Black Lives Matter is a statement of focus, not exclusion. An attack against one is an attack against all. We must all always be ready to assist when anyone is unjustly attacked. Reach out and ask what you can do to be an ally. Be the change you wish to see in this world. Help us to continue to strengthen and serve our community…one life at a time.
